Dance is not only an instrument for self-expression, but also for fostering one’s holistic well being , as dance helps an individual connect with his/her emotional/physical/mental and spiritual realms. This component of movement to a rhythm makes it an amazing pursuit for individuals with Special needs to enjoy a different side of themselves.
Four ways that the delight of moving to a rhythm makes life all the more worthwhile and wealthier for individuals with Special needs.
1) Enhanced psychological resilience: Emotions tied to encounters like bliss or trauma are regularly put away within the body, affecting overall health. Dance provides people with special needs a safe haven to acknowledge and express those emotions. Dance facilitates in understanding the various ways in which our body reacts to negative emotions and aids in revealing the connection between emotions and health.
2) Interpersonal skills: As dance takes place in a group setting and often involves a companion it helps establish deep and extended connection between the dancers. And when that happens, they connect beyond language. This experience makes them feel acknowledged, understood and respected at a deep level and this is pivotal for people with special needs.
3) Establishing a sense of Self – Independence : It has been observed that People with DD / moderate to severe disabilities are a bunch of people that are regularly told what to do and when to do and how to do things. As a therapeutic intervention, dance permits the participants to choose what type of movement/ music they want. This is highly liberating for them, as they decide what, how and when.
4) Aids in good health: It’s therapeutic elements also aid in sensorimotor integration. Apart from a great work out , it helps in building strength, muscle coordination, aids in building balance vis – a – vis the space around. Also it facilitates them in processing the sensory experiences they have on a daily basis.
